SAP Testing Automation

SAP test automation: Overcoming the barriers to implementation

SAP test automation solutions have been available for decades, yet according to a December 2021 SAPInsider S/4 HANA report, 58% of SAP IT teams still use spreadsheets for test management.

So, what are the barriers?

Most SAP teams are reactive with little time for proactivity.

Running SAP operations and infrastructure and satisfying the business is a full-time effort and the highest priority. Finding time for identifying and evaluating software takes a lot of work. The perceived ROI on the time and distraction, even for software that can make a significant difference, needs to be higher to instigate a change.

Then, what is the remedy?

The remedy lies in solutions that are simple to evaluate, straightforward to implement, and easy to resource and administer. Unfortunately, most available SAP test automation software doesn’t meet that criterion.

SAP test automation solutions

Regarding SAP test automation, the most well-known solutions, although powerful and fit for purpose, can be complex to evaluate, require specific skills to use, take some time to implement, and often carry significant maintenance overhead.

The better-known solutions include Micro Focus UFT (Now OpenText UFT), Worksoft Certify, and Tricentis Tosca.

OpenText UFT

Beginning its life as Mercury Test Director in the early 1990s before being acquired by HP, then by Micro Focus, and most recently Open Text, the product has bounced around more than most SAP add-ons.

The fact that this software has changed hands so often and is still available and in use by many SAP teams is a testament to the initial quality of the product.

However, it does take especially skilled resources to use effectively and can require much time to maintain.

Worksoft Certify

Worksoft, founded in 1998, has been long recognised as a credible SAP test automation vendor. One of the very few early solutions providers not to be acquired and folded into other products, Worksoft has continued to develop its SAP test automation solution.

Unfortunately, Worksoft’s market focus is the United States and Europe, with little support for the ANZ Region and thus, perhaps it is the least well-known in the region.

Tricentis Tosca

Founded in 2007, Tricentis Tosca is arguably the best-known of all SAP test automation solutions. Helped by being selected to be part of the SAP Solution Extensions program, many SAP teams look at this product first before looking elsewhere.

Generally known as a big-budget and resource-intensive solution, Tricentis Tosca is often not a consideration for the smaller SAP-using organisations looking to automate SAP testing.

Leapwork is a Danish software company founded in 2015 and is the new kid on the block regarding SAP test automation. As a native no-code test automation solution, Leapwork is easy to install, fast to learn, and requires little maintenance.
